Taking care of a few basic things will make a positive difference in how you start your year. When we are honest with ourselves we all have things that we may not have completed or done as well as we wanted. Instead of beating yourself up about what you did not do in a big or small way, ask yourself “ What can I do?” Then take action on what is in your control. That is it! I guarantee you will feel better and start your year out with a fresh and positive outlook. Take this very ‘scientific method’ of grouping your actions into some seriously lighthearted to-do lists.
Things I should have done and really don’t like to do.
Things that would make me feel good, but, I ran out of time,
Things I am really excited about and know it will really make me happy when I do them.
Here are a few ideas in random order. Take care of any last minute donations. Clean out your closet and give your wardrobe a fresh start.Wrap up any financials for the year. This will help when you’re preparing your taxes next year. Spend anything remaining in your FSA (Flexible Spending Account). Get your free credit report for the year (if you haven’t already). Clean and de-clutter your home. This includes washing & cleaning out your car. Few things feel as great as starting the new year fresh and organized. Return or exchange any Christmas gifts. Clean up your digital space by deleting any old emails, contacts, and files or documents you no longer use. Write down your resolutions. It helps to stick with them if they’re actually visible to you.
Have fun with this and be kind to yourself. Think about your personal and professional life.
I am not telling you what is on my list but, I will tell you how I make it manageable. I choose ONE thing that I do not want to do. TWO things from the list that would make me feel good and THREE things from the list that I am excited about. Let’s face it I would do those anyway.
Now, celebrate! Put on some music, watch a movie, take the dog for a walk, play with the kids, tell someone what you did! Point being, give yourself some sort of reward that means something to you!
Life is a journey and there is always, always a way to move forward. Your investment of time, energy and focus will have huge returns. I have years of successful experience in working with people on their personal and professional journey. Their results have been joy and prosperity.
